The Kern County Public Health Services Department’s Public Health Pipeline Project for students was formed in partnership with California State University, Bakersfield's School of Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Engineering division for their Bachelor of Science in Public Health degree program.

The goal of the project is to expose students to the diverse workforce in the Department, building experience in the field of public health field and prepare them for career opportunities upon graduation. The Pipeline Project sought out students with an interest in working with diverse communities and health equity. Diversity, equity, and inclusion practices were implemented throughout the recruitment and onboarding processes. Students received an introductory discussion session before their interview to review the mission of the health equity program, review terminology, and ask questions about goals outlined in the health equity plan. Once onboarded, interns are provided trainings on embodiment of health equity, cultural competency and sensitivity, and implicit bias.
